Opposition Analysis In Football

PFSA Football Scouting Experts

The PFSA currently have two opposition analysis courses within our portfolio and arguably one of our most popular options. The Level 1 Opposition Analysis course is 100% self-paced and can be taken in your own time and at your own pace. The Level 2 goes much further however as a tutor-led session with 2 experienced tutors who are also UEFO Pro certified.

Explore a small introduction to opposition analysis below and if you wish to take things further then sign up to our courses below.

What is Opposition analysis?

Opposition analysis can be best described as an extension of the coaching arm. An opposition analyst’s role is to provide as much detail and insight on an upcoming opponent as possible, whilst maintaining digestible messages for a manager/coach who may not have time to watch much footage themselves.

Analysis departments are found across the country and are now as prevalent as sports science or medical teams. The main difference is that analysts, are probably there mainly for the coaching staff rather than the players; which differs from other backroom support roles.

What does an opposition analyst do?

Analysts work closely with coaching staff and the manager to work out opposition weakness/strengths. This information is used to support a gameplan which in theory should help the team win the game.

Analysis done well, can also help predict how an opponent will play against you and certain aspects of their play – we are there to take away the surprise!

Opposition Analysis and Performance Analysis – What’s The Difference

What does a professional report look like?

Reports come in all different shapes and sizes depending on your requirements from management. However, generally, it is good to go into a game with a report structure in mind – what formations are the teams using? What individuals will you be targeting and what are their strengths and weaknesses?

The PFSA have a selection of reports available for you to view within our Scouting material pages. These reports vary from Instat, Wyscout and professional heads of opposition analysis.
